Vision is an abstraction, meaning that our eyes sense light from the world around us, and then transforms it into a construct in our mind that represents our perception of reality. Inherent in this process is the minds ability to turn patterns into objects and by doing so we “see” much more than a camera can.
Part of this ability comes from the high dynamic range of our visual system; we conceptualize dark areas and bright areas of a scene just as well as each other. Overcoming this difference in how our mind sees the world compared to how a camera records it is part of the goal of the following images. As a neuroscientist, I hope to create a sense of the experience of looking at the world, rather than simply present a picture of what it looks like.

Dr. Michael A. Colicos is a professor and neuroscience researcher at the University of Calgary in Canada. His lab investigates the nature of neuronal connectivity, studying how we learn and remember things, as well as trying to understand how the brain works to process information. He has developed an interface between living neurons and digital technology, based on growing brain cells on silicon wafers. This technology is also being developed for use as a biological computer, trying to meld the abilities of living neuronal networks and machine intelligence. An interview with Dr. Colicos about some of his current research can be downloaded here. In addition to his professional work in neuroscience, Dr. Colicos is also the creator of the Virtual Intelligence Matrix, a computer-based model of human brain function. The VIM series of software has been under development for the past 10 years, and is one of several project developed by Quantum Flux.
The images presented here reflect his vision of our conceptualiztion of reality. By request we are offering prints for sale, currently available in 13x19 size, printed with 8-colour Epson UltraChrome K3™ inks on Premium Luster Photo Paper. If requested all prints are signed by Dr. Colicos. Pricing is $200 per print, $500 for a set of 3, shipping included. All images are high resolution, the large image links in the gallery are still only 25% of the original size. Images are primarily taken with a Nikon D300, and a variety of lens including the Nikkor 16-85mm, 70-300mm and 50mm f1.8. High Dynamic Range images are assembled by custom techniques from 5-7 exposures. Corporate inquires are welcome; please direct all questions to sales@qflux.org.
